TLA Elections Coming Soon!
Jennifer Anderson

Greetings Everyone,

Elections for TLA are coming up soon. NMRT will be electing candidates for the positions of Secretary/Treasurer and Chair Elect.

This year we are offering something "extra"... in addition to the information provided on the TLA ballot (education, experience, association work) the candidates have all agreed and provided a more personal introduction.

Check out the NMRT Wiki (http://newmembersrt.pbworks.com/) and meet the candidates for next year's Board!

Cheers... and Good Luck!

New NMRT Wiki!
Kelly Brouillard

Greetings NMRT Members!

As you may have noticed, the NMRT website was drastically outdated and needed major revisions. Therefore, to allow NMRT officers to easily make the needed changes ourselves we have moved all of the information located on the NMRT web pages to the new NMRT wiki!

By using the wiki we can update the information ourselves as needed and not have to rely on the TLA webmaster. (Who, by the way, has been VERY helpful...thank you Mary Ann!!!) The NMRT website will still have a presence. The page now features a welcome message and links visitors to the wiki.

NMRT Website: http://www.txla.org/groups/nmrt/
NMRT Wiki: http://newmembersrt.pbworks.com

This conversion to the wiki also required us to create new electronic forms for both NMRT award applications. The Professional Development Grant and the Outstanding New Librarian Award both have new URLs for their electronic applications. You can find information about both awards, including links to their applications, on the NMRT wiki.

I apologize if this switch causes any confusion but we needed be able to update our information in a timely manner and this was the best alternative until TLA implements a new content management system for their web pages.

Please let me know if you have any questions and/or comments!

Happy Holidays!

NMRT - Opportunities to Get Involved
Jennifer Anderson

Greetings!

It’s time to start thinking about next year already. The pumpkins are out, and I saw the first fence line go up for a Christmas tree lot this weekend! TLA Elections are right around the corner. This year we will be selecting a new Secretary/Treasurer and Chair-Elect for the upcoming year. Responsibilities will begin after the NMRT business meeting during the 2010 Annual Conference in San Antonio.

The position of Secretary/Treasurer is a one year commitment. This person will be responsible for the minutes of meetings of the Round Table, financial records and general correspondence. The Chair-Elect position is a three year commitment as follows: the first year as Chair-Elect, the next as Chair, and then finally, in the third year serving as Past-Chair. The responsibilities of each position change from year to year during the 3-year commitment. (More details can be found on the NMRT Rules and Procedures page.)

If you are interested in either of these positions, send me an email and let me know. Self nominations are welcome! For more information regard-ing the Secretary/Treasurer position, our current Secretary Susan Chandler [susan.chandler@baytownlibrary.org] would be happy to answer any questions. If you would like to know more about the Chair-Elect position, feel free to send an email to Kelly Brouillard [kbrouillard@mail.twu.edu] or myself.

Thanks to an amendment to our bylaws, we will be voting electronically this year using the TLA electronic ballot system. Candidate information and brief statements will need to be turned into the TLA office by mid December. I will be sending out details about the electronic ballot system and instructions for candidates, as we get closer to the election.

TLA District Meetings
Kelly Brouillard

District meetings are a great opportunity for networking with library professionals in your area! There are 10 regional districts within TLA that each hold an annual meeting in the fall. The agenda for each district meeting varies but typically include a business meeting and breakout sessions with speakers on varying topics of interest...like a mini-one-day conference. District meetings are also a much more affordable alternative to Annual Conference since they are held within your district so they are close by, and registration fees are usually around $25 with lunch included.

A few district meetings were held in September, but there are serveral scheduled for October and November. Visit the District Meeting page at http://www.txla.org/html/dist/distmtg.html for more information, including dates, locations, district chairs, and registration.

If you are unsure about which district you are in, login to the Members Only section of the TLA website or visit the TLA District Map at http://www.txla.org/html/dist/distmap.html.

"15 Ways to Annoy Your Job Interviewer"
Kelly Brouillard

A big topic in the Fall 2009 issue of the NMRT Newsletter was job hunting, and several members asked for information on finding a job in this tough economy. Since I'm in the hunt as well, I'm always on the look-out for advice and tips. So, let's say you've finally gotten a coveted interview, which seems to be the hardest part these days. It's important to be prepared for you interview. Most experts suggest practicing your answers to common questions and doing some research about the place to which you are applying. However, if you're like me, no matter how prepared I am I'm still really nervous going into an interview, and you've also probably got a couple of nervous habits. I tend to say "um" a lot or fiddle with something in my hand. But be careful with these nervous habits because they can annoy your interviewer and be a turnoff. This article is interesting because it lists several habits a lot of us have, and probably don't notice we are doing, that can be annoying to your interviewer. Keep them in mind as what not to do on your next interview.

If you've found other sources that provide helpful information or have tips for fellow job hunters, comment on this blog post and share!
